National Book Award winner. The long-awaited third volume in Pulitzer Prize-winner Robert A. Caro's award-winning epic biography of Lyndon Johnson. Like the previous two volumes, it has become a national bestseller and garnered unalloyed recognition as the greatest political biography of our time.Master of the Senate, Book Three of The Years of Lyndon Johnson, carries Johnson's story through one of its most remarkable periods: his twelve years, from 1949 to 1960, in the United States Senate. At the heart of the book is its unprecedented revelation of how legislative power works in America, how the Senate works, and how Johnson, in his ascent to the presidency, mastered the Senate as no political leader before him had ever done. It was during these years that all Johnson's experience-from his Texas Hill Country boyhood to his passionate representation in Congress of his hardscrabble constituents to his tireless construction of a political machine-came to fruition. Caro introduces the story with a dramatic account of the Senate itself: how Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, and John C. Calhoun had made it the center of governmental energy, the forum in which the great issues of the country were thrashed out. And how, by the time Johnson arrived, it had dwindled into a body that merely responded to executive initiatives, all but impervious to the forces of change. Caro anatomizes the genius for political strategy and tactics by which, in an institution that had made the seniority system all-powerful for a century and more, Johnson became Majority Leader after only a single term-the youngest and greatest Senate Leader in our history; how he manipulated the Senate's hallowed rules and customs and the weaknesses and strengths of his colleagues to change the "unchangeable" Senate from a loose confederation of sovereign senators to a whirring legislative machine under his own iron-fisted control. Caro demonstrates how Johnson's political genius enabled him to reconcile the unreconcilable: to retain the support of the southerners who controlled the Senate while earning the trust-or at least the cooperation-of the liberals, led by Paul Douglas and Hubert Humphrey, without whom he could not achieve his goal of winning the presidency. He shows the dark side of Johnson's ambition: how he proved his loyalty to the great oil barons who had financed his rise to power by ruthlessly destroying the career of the New Dealer who was in charge of regulating them, Federal Power Commission Chairman Leland Olds. And we watch him achieve the impossible: convincing southerners that although he was firmly in their camp as the anointed successor to their leader, Richard Russell, it was essential that they allow him to make some progress toward civil rights. In a breathtaking tour de force, Caro details Johnson's amazing triumph in maneuvering to passage the first civil rights legislation since 1875. Master of the Senate, told with an abundance of rich detail that could only have come from Caro's peerless research, is both a galvanizing portrait of the man himself-the titan of Capital Hill, volcanic, mesmerizing-and a definitive and revelatory study of the workings and personal and legislative power.

In Africa today issues of how to develop the continent to bring about meaningful development have been underway since the 1960's. Different debates on what is to be the engine for development have emerged in various part of the continent. The 1990's can be described as the era that ushered a major global development paradigm with increasing focus on people's welfare, poverty alleviation, the access to information and technology, economic and regional integration and the environment. Increasingly, African leaders and the donor community recognize that regional cooperation and integration can help bring Africa into the global economy. African countries recognize that purely national programmes will not achieve the growth rates needed to combat poverty, hence the need for international programmes. African states are now more then ever starting to look amongst themselves for the desired developments. This ultimately inspired the establishment of NEPAD.

Since the publication of "The coconut palm - A monograph" in 1960, considerable information has been accrued on the crop through work at research institutes, international organisations and development agencies. Although coconut cultivation is spread over 93 countries, providing employment and creating livelihood opportunities to 64 million families around the globe, smallholder coconut farmers are now facing numerous challenges. The wide gap between the potential and actual yield is a major concern, and as such it is necessary to disseminate knowledge in order to implement research findings. Coconut research in India, one of the leading coconut producing countries, is celebrating its centenary, making this an opportune time to review the research and development advances and the relevant technologies. This detailed, comprehensive book covers all aspects of coconut, from the origins to cultivation, breeding, physiology and value addition, as well as subjects of topical interest like nutrition and health, biotechnology, and climate change and carbon sequestration. Written by leading experts in the fields it emphasises that the livelihood of the small coconut landholders is the ultimate aim of scientists and developmental agencies, and outlines various important strategies to make coconut farming more remunerative globally. It discusses work in all the major coconut growing countries and outlines suggestions for international cooperation. Research work on the crop is comparatively difficult because of its perennial nature, longevity, height, long juvenile phase, large sized nuts, cross pollination and seed propagation. As these special features necessitate greater investment of resources, time and land, it is all the more imperative that research is not duplicated and the information and experience becoming available around the world is shared so that it can be fully utilised. In this context periodic publications, compiling all the available information on coconut assume greater significance. This book is therefore of great value to researchers, students, extension workers, developmental agencies and progressive farmers.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Law - European and International Law, Intellectual Properties, grade: 1, University of Linz (Institute of European Law ), 30 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The patent law is based on intellectual property rights. The groundwork for this was laid in 1883 by the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property1. The international treaty allows for regional treaties, such as the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) and the Agreement of the Trade-Relative Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPs) of the WTO the European Patent Convention (EPC). These are all treaties devolving from the Paris Convention. The EPC covers Europe (in the broadest sense) (cf. Art. 45 PCT). The European Community (EC) is an entity, by international law (cf. Art. 281 EC) and may represent its constituent states in the concerns of the WIPO and WTO. The community has to respect International treaties such as the Paris Convention and many procedures and measures of the EC respond to those treaties. In this thesis only the EPC will be discussed. The EPC created a uniform body of substantive patent law for patents in Europe. It established a single European procedure for the grant of patents. A European patent is worth its fee, because the owner of the patent can use it to economic advantage. The EPC also laid the groundwork for the introduction of a Community Patent by the EC Council. The initial concept of a Community Patent was first discussed in 1960. The last attempt to finalize the Community Patent was made in 2007.

Regionalism and Cooperation in West-Africa

Seminar paper from the year 2003 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: A, ESCP Europe, language: English, abstract: Development in Africa has been an issue for many years now. Since the independence of most of the states in the 1960's, the western countries have tried to help the so- called third world countries to develop their economies and thus to lift their population out of poverty. The efforts were conducted through direct intervention or through the non-governmental organisation like the IMF or the UN. Despite decades of commitment and billion dollar efforts, most of Africa remains in a poor status with nearly half of its population living on less than one dollar per day. Since its independence regional frameworks have existed but only obtained little attention from international as well as from national side. But with the failure of most programmes and the ever growing stronger trend to regional trade agreements throughout the whole world, the frameworks in Africa have moved in the centre of attention. International organisations promote the further integration of these; national governments put the frameworks on the top of their agendas. The aim of this project is to show the possible influence of regional cooperation frameworks in the development process of the countries in the West-African region. The analysis was focused on two existent regional frameworks, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU). During the analysis, the nature of the ECOWAS and the WAEMU is to be identified as well as possible differences in their approach of the regional development. The question that will be asked are how the influence of the unions exactly looks like, which effects this has on the members, how the unions evolved over the time and how they plan to develop in the future.
